about doug
Doug Griffiths was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA), in the constituency of Wainwright, in a by-election on April 8, 2002. At the age of 29, he was the youngest MLA to serve the province. Doug is now in his third term of representing the constituency that has become Battle River-Wainwright.
During the ten years Doug has been in government, he has worked on numerous committees and served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Solicitor General and Public Security and the Minister of Finance and Enterprise. He currently serves as Minister of Municipal Affairs.
Doug lives in Ardrossan with his wife Sue and their two boys Austin and Brady. His love of the rural lifestyle began in the ranching community of Coronation, where he was raised. He left the community to earn degrees in philosophy and education at the University of Alberta.
After graduation, Doug began teaching at Byemoor School in the County of Stettler and was nominated for a teaching award all three years he was there. While he was inspiring the students, they were inspiring him to fight for a strong Alberta. When the MLA position fell vacant he decided to run for the PC Alberta nomination.
In his first term, Doug visited 270 communities and co-authored the government report Rural Alberta: The Land of Opportunity. Passionate about the subject, Doug continued his work in rural development and co-authored the book 13 Ways to Kill Your Community. He has visited most of the 422 communities in Alberta, gaining firsthand knowledge from civic leaders and citizens throughout the province.
Doug is a proud Albertan who has an unwavering desire and drive to work hard and build a better Alberta.
